The undersecretary general of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said that the party will challenge the ban on the Ghana Police Service to prevent its members from organizing further protests in Accra.
Peter Boamah Otokunor, who was speaking at Joy FM Main Story On Wednesday he pointed out that no institution has the right to prohibit people from demonstrating, so the police move is regrettable.
“No one can prohibit anyone from exercising the right accorded to the citizens of Ghana simply by issuing a statement and stating that protests are prohibited.
“We all know that the demonstration is consecrated by law, therefore, no one can prevent us from protesting, no one can prevent us from expressing our discontent at the grievances and injustice that have been perpetrated in this country.
“We do not know of any judicial restraining order and if we receive it, we will challenge that restraining order because the court and the police do not have the powers to prevent us from protesting and the law is clear,” he was categorical.
A High Court in Accra on Wednesday granted a request by the Ghana Police Service to prevent the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from organizing further protests in Accra until January 10, 2021.
For nearly two weeks, supporters and supporters of the NDC have organized numerous street protests following the declaration of Nana Akufo-Addo as president-elect in the recently concluded elections.
NDC presidential candidate John Mahama described the EC verdict as fictitious in favor of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Since then, his position has been strongly backed by NDC supporters who have taken to the streets to demand that the ad be struck down.
The NDC is also challenging the outcome of some parliamentary seats it said its candidates won. So far, they have bagged Sene West and now turned their attention to Techiman South.
But in a statement signed by the Deputy Director of Police (DSP) of the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Effia Tenge, she urged party supporters to refrain from participating in activities that may go against the court order.
This, says Mr Otokunor, is illegitimate and the party will dispute it to make sure the right thing is done.
“With what they are doing, this is a very shameful period in our democracy. This is a very dark period that unfortunately we should never live, we have a supposed human rights lawyer as president and he is perpetrating all these acts ”.
