The president of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, says that no member of the party has insulted the Akyem ethnic group.

He argued that the recent ethnocentric comments are a calculated attempt to divert attention from the 2020 NDC manifesto that he believes will turn the country’s fortunes.

Ofosu Ampofo’s comments come as a result of calls from some Okyeman chiefs and residents who are from the Akyem lineage of NDC standard bearer John Mahama to denounce some comments that they say are derogatory to the ethnic group.

A group calling itself the Concern Citizens of Okyeman demonstrated on Wednesday against the former president and the NDC for allegedly describing them as ‘Akyem Sakawa Mafias’.

This follows claims by President Akufo-Addo that his predecessor, Mr. Mahama, had endorsed a post by Bolgatanga Central MP Isaac Adongo, describing people in his government as ‘Akyem Sakawa Mafias’ who are looting. the state.

The group, made up of the chiefs and residents of Akyem Abuakwa, Kotoku and Bosome, all in the Eastern Region, demand an apology from the NDC standard bearer.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a training program for lawyers and other members of the NDC on electoral laws ahead of the December elections this year in Kumasi on Thursday, Ofosu-Ampofo said the unrest is being fueled by the ruling PNP for political capital.

“If someone publishes a post and refers to a group within the government that is pursuing something and the person talks about them, I don’t see why the entire Akyem community will take ownership of it and decide to go and demonstrate,” the president said. .

He further said that the demonstration was an effort to “divert attention from our manifesto and the kind of momentous effect it has brought to the government. Otherwise, I don’t think anyone has insulted Akyem’s people. “

Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo added that NDC will not perpetuate these sentiments and will refrain from entertaining arguments in this regard.

President Akufo-Addo, along with his vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, also asked the former president to apologize for the comment.
