The Chairman of the Northern Development Authority, Dr. Hakeem Wemah, has warned against usurpation of the Electoral Commission mandate by anyone during the presidential and parliamentary elections on 7 December.
According to Dr. Wemah, “you do not have the mandate to carry out and declare the results of the elections, the EC does leave them to fulfill their constitutional mandate,” he said.
Dr. Wemah spoke along with eight other distinguished moral voices in Tamale at the Peace Conference of Elders and Moral Community organized by the Northern Democratic and Development Institute, NDDI, a group of policy experts based in Tamale, on the topic; Holding peaceful, free, fair and credible elections: a responsibility of all Ghanaians.
He said that under the 1992 constitution, the EC had the authority to hold elections, count votes, collect and announce final results, no one else.
He stated that when everyone complied with the constitutional stipulation, Ghanaians would successfully emerge from these upcoming elections to the admiration of the world.
According to him, the EC proved capable and improved its transparency parameters through its Let the People Know information policy and called on Ghanaians to support them in fulfilling their mandate diligently to provide credible surveys for all.

In his welcoming address, Mr. Mustapha Sanah, Executive Chairman of NDDI, tasked all major political actors to support the call for peace before, during and after the 2020 elections.
According to him, a cursory audit of the EC indicated that the Commission was prepared to hold free, fair and transparent elections.
Mr. Sanah urged all political parties, the media, security agencies, and observer organizations to support the EC in generating transparency and holding free and fair elections.
Other speakers included; Ms. Lawrencia Adams, International Development Experts, Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, UN Special Envoy to West Africa, HE Ms. Diana Acconcia, EU Ambassador to Ghana, Most Reverend Philip Naameh, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, Reverend Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, President of the National Peace Council, Mr. Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafo, President of the National Media Commission and His Eminence, Dr. Osmanu Nuhu Sharabutu, National Chief Imam.
The peace conference was chaired by Prof. Haruna Yakubu, former Vice Chancellor of the University for Development, with Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II as Special Guest of Honor.
