The dean of the School of Performing Arts at the University of Ghana, Professor Kofi Agyekum, popularly known as Opanyin Agyekum, has recorded his dissatisfaction with recent events in the Volta region involving a group described as the Secessionists of West Togo .

Members of the group have recently been campaigning for the restoration of western Togo as an independent state of Ghana.

Secesson attacks

The group, on Friday, September 25, 2020, blocked some main roads in the Volta Region, preventing vehicular movement and leaving passengers who traveled to areas of the Region very stranded.

They also attacked some police stations in the region, believing that they were looking for ammunition to advance their course.

On Tuesday, September 29, some buses belonging to the State Transportation Corporation caught fire and the group is said to be the mastermind behind the arson attack.

Counter force

Some people have asked the government to apply force to bring the group to order.

Experienced journalist Abdul Malik Kweku Baako shares the common belief that the use of counter force will help solve the problem.

For him, dialogue, as some stakeholders have suggested, is not the solution.

Dialogue for what? Dialogue with whom and for what?

“Do you sit with them to achieve what purpose? … They are already on board. They are inside Ghana. They are Ghanaian citizens. So what are we going to negotiate?” he questioned.

“If they use force, we should apply the opposite force … If they apply force, the State of Ghana should apply the opposite force to keep the unitary character of Ghana intact … There is no compromise in that; there will be no negotiation” , He said. he insisted.

No government will accept your demand

Also speaking on the subject, Opanyin Agyekum says that no government will meet the demands of the secessionists.

According to him, the western Togo that the group demands is unfounded and non-existent.

Opanyin Agyekum wondered why the group is misbehaving because, for him, Ghana is blessed with more than 70 ethnic groups that have merged and exist peacefully.

He warned the secessionists to stop their attacks saying “we have nothing like western Togo anywhere”. So, let no one think they can break away and I don’t think any government will stand on the fence and watch them go. Where will they go? … It will not work ”.
