The director of Urban Studies at the University of Ghana, Professor Martin Oteng-Ababio, has argued that when it comes to the debate over the legalization of the Okada business, no African country has succeeded in completely eliminating the commercial use of motorcycles.

According to him, although some countries have given the debate wide consideration, the ban on Okada operations has never been successful.

“… Perhaps let me take you to the African continent, areas where attempts to ban Okada have never worked …” the professor postulated in an interview with Citi News.

He said the most distant successful attempt by some countries ended up restricting the operations of Okada cyclists; where they were not allowed to carry out some routes or operate within the central business districts.

In an attempt to back up their arguments with facts, said Professor Oteng-Ababio; “… For example, if you go to Nigeria, they restrict them to certain areas… if that’s what we want to do, we can have a conversation about that. But banning it completely is something I don’t think will ever work. No country in Africa has been successful even in Rwanda. “

Prof Oteng-Ababio, who is in favor of the legalization of Okada’s business in Ghana, said that based on his many studies on operations, some countries even go to the extreme of providing cycle lanes as a means of reducing accidents. related to Okada.

“If we know we want to regulate this, then we will provide one, good access for them. Some of these accidents happen because of their rush to avoid apprehension, so once it is regulated, this apprehension will not be there… so our inability to give them the opportunity to operate also explains some of these accidents… ”, he added.

The debate over the legalization of the Okada business was rekindled after former President John Dramani Mahama in his manifesto promised to legalize the operation.
