A widely circulated social media post claims that African leaders have endorsed a Malagasy ‘vaccine’ for Covid-19.

The post further states that leaders, including Cyril Ramaphosa and the presidents of Egypt, Kenya and Rwanda, have held a meeting and “have not been left behind, after endorsing the adoption of Covid-19 organic medicine made available by the Republic of Madagascar “.

Published in early May, the post promised that the organic cure would be widely distributed in African nations.

YEN.com.gh He reported that the herbal drink, dubbed COVID-Organics, has been strongly endorsed by President Andry Rajoelina, but that no evidence has supported the claim that the tonic cures the virus.

The World Health Organization recently released a statement revealing that medicinal plants, such as the one used in the tonic, “are being considered as possible treatments for Covid-19 and should be analyzed to determine their efficacy and adverse side effects” .

According to the statement, WHO and African countries are collaborating to ensure the safe and effective development of traditional medicine on the continent with the agency that provides financial and technical support.

The African Union commented that it is still in talks with Madagascar, “in order to obtain technical data on the safety and efficacy of a herbal remedy, recently announced by Madagascar for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19.”

However, the union was careful to emphasize that it would work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Africa to explore the “safety and efficacy of COVID-Organics”.

This statement on the subject is far from a radiant endorsement and there is also little evidence to support the claim that African presidents met to support the cure.

Africa Check reports that the World Health Organization, despite collaborating with Africa to assess traditional responses to the pandemic, also warned that the use of unproven products can be dangerous.
