The National Lottery Authority (NLA) in collaboration with the Volta Regional Police Command has successfully arrested four lottery scammers there.

Godwin Agbenyefia alias Demon, 19; Reuben Abusah aka Last Burial, 20; Kelvin Kwame Abouzi alias Kartel, 20, and Kingsley Adelekey, 21 operated out of Akatsi and Ho.

The Ho Circuit Court, chaired by Felix Datsomor, has held the suspects in police custody to reappear on 23 September.

Lottery scammers have created various accounts on Facebook, WhatsApp and other social media platforms using the logo and images of Authority staff and images of other people to defraud unsuspecting people.

In an attempt to get rich quick, scammers can convince people to transfer mobile money to them in exchange for fake lottery numbers.

Lottery scammers receive various sums of money from their victims to bet lottery numbers on them.

After the National Lottery Authority (NLA) drawing, scammers send photographs of FAKE Winning Coupons (Prize) to their victims suggesting that they have won.

They then demand between 20 and 40% of the amount of money they claim the victims had won before the NLA paid for their winning tickets.

Subsequently, after the victims pay the money with the percentage of the fake winning prize, the scammers quickly block their victims’ phone number and disappear.

Sometimes they manage to convince their victims to send money to sign up and qualify for the leaked winning numbers.

The National Lottery Authority (NLA) cautions the general public that it has not designed any registration form for the public to register to win the lottery.

“The results of the lottery drawings are conducted in an open and transparent manner and the drawing is open to the general public to witness every day, except Sundays and holidays.

“It is absolutely false that the people and staff of the Authority have access to winning lottery numbers,” he said.

The Authority congratulated the Volta Regional Police Headquarters for the successful operation.

The NLA said it will continue to work with law enforcement and other relevant security agencies to arrest lottery scammers across the country.

However, he emphasized that it is the public’s responsibility to be more vigilant and stop hiring the services of lottery scammers.
