Actor Joseph Van Vicker says he was threatened by Nigerian leading actors for constantly starring in films in their country.
According to him, it was due to the competitive nature of the film business as many Nigerians prefer to have one of their own cast in the roles.
Speaking to Nana Ama McBrown on United Showbiz on UTV, Van Vicker explained: “Initially everything was fine, but at one point, the Nigerian male actors had problems with me, so I faced some threats, adverse situations here and there because they were not very happy.”
He continued: “You know the movie business is incredibly competitive, so it’s him or him. When there is a certain rank, it is Mr. A or Mr. B, so if Mr. A is the one at the top, he will be around for a long time and that will not allow others to shine, so the Nigerian lead actors weren’t too comfortable. “
Vicker pointed out that the actors then had to understand that if the role is for a Ghanaian or a Nigerian, “we are all brothers.”
“Later, they realized that I had no bad motives for them, so it was not what they were thinking,” he said.
When asked if he stayed in Nigeria for most of the roles he played in Nigerian films, he said that he frequently traveled to the country for work and, after finishing his work, returned home.
He noted that Nigerian producers paid Ghanaian actors very well and he really appreciated the competition between Ghana and Nigeria every time he starred in films in Nigeria.
“… It made me appreciate the competition. It made me appreciate other people’s lifestyles and it also made me take risks knowing that as an actor, because it’s highly competitive, you want to get out of your comfort zone because that’s where the real opportunities and development of yourself can be. ” Van Vicker said.
