Nigeria to create teams to investigate police brutality | General news

The Nigerian government has ordered the creation of judicial panels in all 36 states to investigate allegations of police brutality.

The panels will receive and investigate complaints of police brutality, including those linked to the dissolved Special Anti-Theft Brigade, known as Sars.

The panels will also investigate incidents of police officers using excessive force against protesters since the demonstrations began last week.

This is in addition to an independent investigation panel to be established by the Nigerian National Human Rights Commission.

Thousands of Nigerians have protested in major cities against police brutality.

Human rights groups such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have condemned the use of force against protesters during the first days of the protests.

They have called for police reforms and the prosecution of those responsible for the brutality.

Amnesty said that about 10 people were killed in the protests and hundreds were injured.

The Lagos state governor said that the police officers who allegedly opened fire on the protesters were arrested and tried. But the protesters seem dissatisfied.
