A top Nigerian minister lashed out at CNN on Thursday, saying the network should be sanctioned for its investigation, which uncovered evidence that the Nigerian army and police opened fire on unarmed protesters on October 20.

CNN’s investigation focused on a demonstration against police brutality, spearheaded by the largely peaceful “#EndSARS” movement.

Information and Culture Minister Lai Mohammed on Thursday dismissed the CNN investigation as “fake news” and “disinformation,” and repeatedly denied that the military used actual rounds against protesters.

“Like everyone else, I saw the CNN report. I must tell you, it reinforces the misinformation that is circulating, and it is blatantly irresponsible and bad journalistic work by a reputable international news organization,” he told reporters at a press conference in Abuja. , in the federal government’s most significant response to the October 20 violence yet.

“This is very serious and CNN should be penalized for that,” he said.

CNN supports their investigation, a company spokesperson said.

“Our reports were carefully and meticulously investigated, and we stand behind them,” the spokesperson said by email.

The report was based on the testimony of dozens of witnesses, and photos and videos obtained and geolocated by CNN. He painted a picture of how members of the Nigerian army and police fired into the crowd, killing at least one person and wounding dozens more.
