The next government of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will create dedicated lanes for Okada if necessary to accommodate the anticipated increase in commercial motorcycle operators and the concomitant traffic consequences if the party wins the December 7, 2020 elections and Okada is legalized. as promised by former President John Mahama, the party’s national youth organizer, George Opare Addo.

He told Kwabena Prah Jr on Accra 100.5FM’s Ghana Yensom morning show Wednesday that: “In Holland, an advanced democracy, even bicycles have lanes.”

“We create lanes for the rapid bus system,” therefore, “if it becomes necessary and becomes part of our lives, we will find ways to make sure there are purposefully designated lanes. [to Okada]”Noted Mr. Opare Addo.

He said: “We may not be able to do everything completely, but in places where patronage is very high, the government is made to provide solutions to problems, so if that becomes a problem and it becomes necessary for us to provide lanes for motorcycles, we must find ways to provide it and that is part of the consultations that are going to be made and we will regulate it and ensure that it is safe ”.

In August this year, the NDC flag bearer said he would legalize Okada’s business in his next administration.

Speaking to party bosses, people and supporters in Kpando, Volta region, on Friday August 21, 2020, Mr. Mahama said: “I have been seeing young people who have finished school and cannot to find a job and therefore they are looking for something they can do and many of our young people ride motorcycles and transport people from one place to another, and we call them Okada ”.

“But in our law, it says that Okada is illegal, but Okada is a reality, it has come to stay, it cannot be stopped, so I suggested and I say that when we take office, we will legalize Okada, but we will regulate it,” Mahama said. .

He further explained: “We will regulate it and we will give them training so that they can do their business safely without causing people’s lives, they must obey all traffic regulations so that they are allowed to practice their profession.”

Okada serves as the main mode of transportation for many communities in the more remote and rural parts of the country, such as northern Ghana, although they are also popular in large cities due to the convenience they provide to users in terms of beating traffic. .

It has been the source of livelihood for many people in the country.

For example, Alhaji Tijani Umar, an Okado operator, told Class91.3FM a few months ago that he feeds his four wives and 16 children from that business.

In an interview with Benjamin Akakpo at the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Class91.3FM on Thursday, January 9, 2020, Alhaji Tijani, who does business in Ashaiman in the Greater Accra region, described Okada’s business as a source. important sustenance for the sustenance of his family.

“I have four wives, 16 children. Previously, I was a junk dealer … and everything was not going [on well]; if i didn’t join the okada [business], I can’t feed them [family].

“My family knows that I am a cyclist from Okada. I even have an adopted daughter in Legon, I always visit her with my Okada and her friends laugh at her because her father is an Okada man but I know what I’m getting, I know what I’m looking for, Okada is a good business ”, he told Benjamin Akakpo.

According to Alhaji Tijani, Sundays are the best days for Okada’s business.

Alhaji Tijani has been an Okada pilot for seven years and earns 1,000 GHS per month.

The Ghana Road Traffic Regulations 2012 (LI 2180) prohibit the use of tricycles and motorcycles for commercial purposes.
