Newcastle made an ambitious attempt to sign Idrissa Gana Gueye on loan from Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday night.

The former Everton midfielder will be able to leave, but he’s not sure where to go.

Gueye joined the Paris giants from Everton in the summer of 2019 for £ 30 million.

Under then-manager Thomas Tuchel, Gueye’s career at PSG got off to a phenomenal start, with the club winning its first eight games without conceding a single goal.

But things have stalled for the 31-year-old this season. Gueye has made 16 Ligue 1 appearances for PSG so far, but has completed 90 minutes only once since October.

He entered for just nine minutes in PSG’s surprising 3-2 loss to Lorient on Sunday.

Gueye is well versed in the Premier League as he was a mainstay in the first team when he was at Everton.

Favorite for his combative style and relentless career, the Senegalese international made 108 appearances for the Toffees.

Newcastle also remains interested in Arsenal’s Joe Willock, but a move by Leicester’s Hamza Choudhury appears to have backfired with Brendan Rodgers reluctant to let him go.

Steve Bruce also tried to sign Schalke defender Ozan Kabak on loan, but the deal proved too expensive.
