The government has called “false” the claims of the main opposition Democratic National Congress (NDC) and its standard-bearer John Dramani Mahama that they have won the majority of parliamentary seats in the recently concluded December 7 elections.

According to the government, it is not in the mouth of any candidate to declare that they have obtained a majority in Parliament.

Addressing the media Tuesday night [8 Dec 2020], NDC presidential candidate, Mr. Mahama, said that analysis of the NDC results shows that the largest opposition party has won the most seats in Parliament.

“We thank the electorate for giving us a working majority in parliament; 140 seats in Parliament, which is a majority and you should not try to subvert that.

“I have seen the results that we have compiled so far and I am excited, I am happy with the results; we won in 10 out of 16 regions and the people of Ghana have expressed their trust in us, ”said Mahama.

But reacting to this at a press conference a few hours later, Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said that Mahama’s claim is false.

Mr Nkrumah said: “For the first time, a candidate, a presidential candidate claims that his party has obtained a parliamentary majority.

“This claim by the candidate that he had obtained a parliamentary majority is false.

“Anyone who has followed the electoral process in Ghana knows that we have tellers in all 275 constituencies that are different from the teller for the presidential elections.

“These tellers collect the results and make a formal statement of who has won the constituency.

“Ghana’s media is scattered throughout the 275 constituencies and their collection centers. You are the ones reporting on this election. If someone has won 140 in Parliament, they will know.

“So Mr Mahama’s claim that his party has won the parliamentary majority is false… so it is important that at this time that claim is rejected so that the Ghanaian public, some of whom go to the bed, the international community listening does not give the idea that Mahama’s party has won the parliamentary majority. “
