For the second time in 48 hours, supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have besieged the premises of the Electoral Commission (EC) headquarters office in Accra.
The group, made up of mostly women, was seen to be resisting attempts by security officials to prevent them from approaching the electoral management body’s facilities in Ridge.
NDC supporters have been vehemently contesting the results of the December 7 general election in which the PNP candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo, emerged as the winner.
The conclusion reached by the EC did not have the results of Techiman South, an area whose figures were in dispute.
But the EC commissioner said the constituency’s outstanding number of votes will not make a significant difference, even if it is added to that of the NPP’s closest contender, John Mahama of the NDC.
Today’s demonstration follows yesterday’s initial one before the declaration of results by the head of the EC.
Despite the announcement of the official results, the party rejected the EC statement at an evening press conference led by Tamale South MP Haruna Iddrisu.
“As a party, we have had extensive consultations and a detailed analysis of the election result as announced by Jean Mensa, the president of the EC.”
“We have come to a single compelling conclusion, that this is a flawed discredited election and therefore we reject the presidential result without reservation,” he said.
In the latest development, a fight broke out between protesters and the police at the security barricade around a cordoned off area of the EC headquarters.
A former First National Vice President of the Democratic National Congress (NDC), Anita De-Soso, who led the protest, told JoyNews that; “As a woman, Jean Mensa is also a woman and wants to create problems for the country.”
“If something happens, the men will flee and the women will be here,” he added.
JoyNews‘Kwesi Parker-Wilson reported that police officers, after minutes of intense defiance, managed to disperse the aggrieved crowd.
