Supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the regional capital of the Upper East, Bolgatanga, have taken to the streets to protest against the Electoral Commission (EC) for declaring Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as President-elect of the Republic in the fair the election ended.

The protests began around 7:00 p.m. at the premises of the party’s electoral district office.

The protesters set car tires on fire, blocked the stretch of the Tamale-Navrongo highway and chanted their disapproval of the EC’s actions.

They were composed mainly of young men and women, and gave a strong public expression of disagreement with the results announced by the EC.

It was unclear who was leading the protesters, as no faces were known at the scene. But GhanaWeb sources revealed that some party executives were behind the protests.

The operations team of the Regional Police Command, after a warning, has entered and has taken control of the situation. The gathering has dispersed and the road cleared for the flow of traffic.

At the scene of the events, personnel from the Police Service have been positioned to maintain absolute calm.

No arrests were made at the time of the report.
