Hundreds of supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have gathered at the Nima police station in Accra, where the president of the Association of Small Concerned Miners is being held.
They demand the release of the president of the Association, Michael Peprah, who was arrested on Saturday, August 29, 2020 by the police through a Facebook post.
He was arrested in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti region, and later transferred to Accra, according to reports.
Police say he was causing fear and panic with his Facebook post.
Unconfirmed reports say that Peprah was arrested on the order of the Minister of Environmental Science and Technology, Professor Frimpong Boateng.
Previously, the NDC condemned the arrest, calling it shameful.
“This morning we received information that the president of the Ghana Association of Small Concerned Miners was arrested by officers from the Cyber Crimes Unit of the Ghana Police Service in the Ashanti Region.
“We understand that he was arrested at the Ashanti Regional Office and this morning transported to the Nima Police Station. We have spoken with him and he tells us that he was arrested yesterday at 3pm in Kumasi and was not told the reason for his Their phones were confiscated and taken to their home and a search was carried out, ”the opposition party said in a statement.
