It has come to the attention of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that a shipment of 436 pistols and ammunition illegally imported into the country from Turkey, was intercepted and seized in the port of Tema the night before.
The pistols and ammunition that had been concealed in a shipment of personal effects from Turkey were found during a physical examination by port customs officials and taken to the Tema Habour police station.
Attached is a snapshot of the weapons seized from a van and the police statement from the clearing agent confirming the incident.
We are informed that the weapons have been returned to the arsenal of the Ghana Revenue Authority in the port of Tema. We have collected information that some unscrupulous people are trying to unleash the weapons.
While we congratulate the Customs Preventive and Excise Service unit at the port of Tema for acting swiftly to seize this shipment, we demand that they update the nation on this worrying development in a spirit of transparency. Ghanaians deserve to know who illegally imported such pistols and ammunition into the country and for what purpose. More importantly, Ghanaians deserve to know the identity of the so-called “Big Men” who are pulling the strings behind the scenes for the shipment to be released.
Given the danger these weapons can pose to the nation’s security in the wrong hands, we humbly appeal to the media to follow this story closely. We’re seeing!
Signed
Sammy Gyamfi Esq.
National Communication Officer, NDC
