NDC is skeptical of EC’s resolution to declare presidential results before 5pm

The opposition Democratic National Congress (NDC) has expressed its fear over the declaration provided by the Electoral Commission (EC) of the presidential results of the 2020 elections for 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 8.

The NDC believes that the EC’s failure to tabulate the certified results of constituencies that are coming in at the national level smacks of a grand scheme to rig the elections in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Ghanaians expect the Election Commission to declare the winner within 24 hours as promised after the certification of the results of the presidential election.

But in his fourth electoral press conference organized today, NDC Secretary General John Asiedu Nketia said that the lack of commitment from the EC to start imputing data in its National Collection Center in real time along with the late start The process makes the transparency of the final results questionable.

“Normally, the results keep coming in as they are declared in the field. We are concerned that, at this time, there are some regional offices where the compilation has not started when the tellers of the same Commission have declared the results in the different constituencies. The reason is that the collation has not started and the EC still insists that they will declare the results within two hours. Transparency requires that as results begin to arrive, they be certified and made available to the public so that everyone can follow the trend of the results. We are not going to sit down and let the EC compile the results of all the polling stations throughout the country and announce the bulk figure to the nation when there is no basis for the collation, “he said.

According to Mr. Nketia, the information available to the NDC from the National Collation Center suggests that the collection of the results recently began against best electoral practices.

“At least by now, we should have gotten more than half the presidential results. So even while we wait for those that have yet to be counted, there will be plenty of time for us to review what has been certified. Our National Collation officials have just told us that the results have started to appear less than an hour ago. What has been happening between 5:00 p.m. and now so that this competent EC has not been able to certify the results of the electoral districts to the extent that the Commission has not initiated any compilation process at the regional level? So what’s going on? ”He questioned.

By asking stakeholders to ensure that the electoral management body does the right thing, the NDC has reiterated its determination not to accept the results of a flawed electoral process.

“We want to call on the international community, the peace-loving Ghanaians, the traditional authorities who urge the EC to do the right thing and to warn the Commission that any wrong step will have serious consequences,” warned Asiedu Nketia.
