The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has elected the outgoing MP for Nadowli Kaleo, Alban Bagbin, as its speaker of the eighth parliament.
The move comes a day after the ruling NPP also hired incumbent president Aaron Mike Ocquaye as president.
Following the NDC Functional Executive Committee meeting on Tuesday, the party agreed to maintain the current leadership in Parliament: Haruna Iddrisu as minority leader, James Avedzi as deputy minority leader, Asawase MP Muntaka Mubarak as Chief Whip, Banda MP, Ahmed Ibrahim and Ada MP Comfort Doeyo Cudjoe as deputy whip.
Both the NPP and the NDC have 137 MPs and an independent candidate who chooses to do business with the NPP.
As it stands now, both parties will present their candidates for the Speaker post to vote and decide who is the winner.
New Patriotic Party (NPP) secretary general John Boadu says the Democratic National Congress (NDC) could lose its vice president position if it does not cooperate.
Interacting with the press after the party’s Executive Council meeting on Monday, Boadu noted that although the difference between the PNP and the NDC in parliament is very small, the opposition should not present what it described as an unnecessary contest for the Senior Vice President and First Vice President. positions.
In his opinion, the NPP will vote unanimously to acquire the positions of First President and First Vice President and will leave the NDC with the second position of Vice President.
However, he stressed that if the NDC presents a challenge, the only independent candidate from the next Parliament who has chosen to sit with the NPP will be nominated.
