The only health center in the municipal capital of Ahanta West now has a renovated isolation center to help health workers treat any suspected coronavirus cases.
This is courtesy of a parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Dr. Emmanuel Okumi Andoh constituency.
Many fear that Covid-19 may expose gaps in the healthcare infrastructure they have always worked on.
A colorful ceremony was held at the facility to officially deliver the center to the Municipal Health Directorate.
Dr. Andoh told reporters that his initiative was in response to a call from the Municipal Health Directorate to help support his covid preparation19 when the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) was presented to the same health center.
“This is a rural community and many of our communities do not even have Veronica buckets to help them wash their hands and ensure personal hygiene. It is important that we all come together to support, ”he said.
The municipality, located on the outskirts of the Sekondi Takoradi metropolis, capital of the western region, has so far registered 9 cases of Covid-19 with health workers complaining about the difficult conditions in which they already work.
Investing in health and advocating for a better healthcare infrastructure for the electorate and its people, he says, is an important part of his election campaign.
The only acting Rector of Takoradi Technical University, who also serves as NDC President in the area, said this is to show his commitment to helping address the health challenges of the electorate when he is voted as a Member of Parliament.
“For this facility, we do not yet have the necessary equipment to help run the isolation center. We need help to combat this pandemic. For this we are grateful for this effort,” said Timothy Kobina Ofori, Municipal Director of Health.
Ahanta West’s seat is currently in the hands of PNP attorney Kojo Kum seeking reelection in the December poll.
Aside from 1992 and 2012, when the NDC took the seat, the area was largely dominated by the PNP.
However, Dr. Andoh counts his years of experience as a strong academic connection to the people of Ahanta due to his many years of staying and working in the area to obtain the seat this year.
“I think people in this constituency would weigh our history and competencies and make a decision. I am very confident of success in December, ”he said.
