Inspector General of Police, James Oppong-Boanuh Inspector General of Police, James Oppong-Boanuh

The opposition Democratic National Congress has praised the order issued by Inspector General of Police, James Oppong Boanuh, ordering police officers who will be deployed for election duties on December 7 to go out wearing only designated uniforms.

However, the party says that the essence of the IGP order will not be complete if it is not guaranteed that police officers and officers from other security agencies who will monitor the elections possess IDs showing their names and other details.

In a party statement signed by its Director of Operations for its 2020 Campaign, Lt. Col. (Rtd) Larry Gbevlo-Lartey, the NDC said the sanctioned uniforms, along with the necessary dog tags, “will mitigate fears that some Police uniforms will be sewn into the hands of vigilantes / thugs recruited by the ruling Party / government to intimidate and repress voters in opposition strongholds ”.

“In fact, the NDC takes seriously the information that circulates in the sense that people other than the real police officers, some of whom were described as National Security agents who committed acts of banditry during the election of Ayawaso West Wogon last year, they will be dressed in police uniforms to avoid detection, ‘the statement added.

The party further maintains that “wearing a dog tag is the safest way to safeguard the integrity and image of the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies that will be deployed for security activities on Election Day.”

Therefore, the NDC has urged the Inspector General of Police to take seriously your legitimate concerns and act on them in the interests of public safety and a peaceful election.

PRESS RELEASE ON SECURITY PROVISIONS FOR THE SURVEYS OF DECEMBER 7.

The attention of the NDC has been drawn to a circular issued by the Inspector General of Police to the effect that only traditional Police uniforms would be used in the 2020 Elections and related operations. According to the circular, the traditional uniforms for this purpose will be “blue-black / black and camouflage uniforms.”

The NDC believes that these measures stem from the lessons learned from the embarrassment suffered by the Ghana Police Service during the disgrace of the midterm elections in Ayawaso West Wuogon. Therefore, we congratulate the IGP and its staff for the plans drawn up by the National Electoral Security Working Group to clean up the security situation, maintain law and order on December 7 election day, and guarantee peace. However, the NDC is of the opinion that the announcement about the authorized uniform to be worn on D-Day will be inappropriate without ensuring that all police personnel and others drawn from other security agencies are properly identified with their names clearly visible on their uniforms. .

This normal dress requirement for all service personnel should be strictly enforced to allay fears that some police uniforms being sewn will end up in the hands of vigilantes / thugs recruited by the Ruling Party / government to intimidate and repress voters. in the strongholds of the opposition. In fact, the NDC takes information that circulates very seriously that people other than genuine police officers, some of whom were described as National Security agents who committed acts of banditry during the bi- Ayawaso West Wogon’s election last year, they will be dressed in police uniforms to avoid detection.

Our argument is that wearing a dog tag is the safest way to safeguard the integrity and image of the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies that will be deployed for Election Day security activities.

It should be noted that in a recent meeting of the Ministry of National Security and a delegation from the NDC, the latter made the same point because we are genuinely concerned about the likelihood that para-police elements will be displayed in Police uniforms to perpetrate acts of intimidation and brutality . .

At the same meeting, the NDC delegation also recommended that the Police administration, for the sake of accountability and ease of reference, keep a register of all personnel who would be deployed to various locations on December 7 and make this list available in case of any eventuality.
The additional measures recommended by the NDC will serve to ensure a free and fair election for the public.

We therefore urge the Inspector General of Police to take serious note of our legitimate concerns and act on them in the interests of public safety and a peaceful election.

Signed
Lieutenant Colonel (Rtd) Larry Gbevlo-Lartey
