The opposition Democratic National Congress (NDC) has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of flagrant incompetence in carrying out the ongoing voter screening exercise.
The voter exhibition that started on September 18, 2020 is intended to provide Ghanaian voters with the opportunity to authenticate their details to the EC voter registry.
But the NDC at a press conference yesterday said the process has been riddled with anomalies that have made scores of Ghanaian electorates unable to complete the process successfully.
In briefing the media, NDC Elections Director Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah called the exercise a comedy of errors and an unacceptable level of incompetence on the part of the Election Commission headed by Jean Mensa.
According to him, the EC’s autocratic conduct and leadership style had resulted in many Ghanaians not being able to find their names on the new voter registry that was to deprive many on voting day.
He explained that, according to the provisions of the law, the EC was supposed to provide a “provisional register to each political party registered in the manner determined by the Commission”, but it was presented to them just 35 hours before the start of the exhibition exercise.
“Even with the copies of the register that the EC is using for exposure so far, our observations show widespread anomalies at various centers across the country. So far, our officials and agents have reported anomalies in all regions except Asawase in the Ashanti region.
“This has already given us reason to believe that anomalies and distortions in the registry may be deliberate, as it is widespread only in our strongholds. We have come to the conclusion that the current provisional record cannot be trusted because the level of distortion is incredible, ”he added.
Ankrah also accused the EC of secretly printing and laminating an unspecified number of voter identification cards to rig the elections on December 7.
“Our attention has been drawn to the EC district office in the Central Ablekuma constituency, where EC officials were caught on video late at night printing and laminating an unspecified number of ID cards. of voters. Obviously, this is just one of the modern manipulation techniques that the EC has employed prior to these elections.
“We condemn this shameful and theft act very vehemently and therefore call for an independent investigation of this incident and demand an explanation from the EC on how any group can be allowed to print such voter identification card numbers when the exhibit is ongoing, “he said. set.
