National Test of Science and Mathematics. I am worried about the grand finale of 2020. Why only schools for children: Opoku Ware, Legon Presec and Adisco? More sadly, for the past 7 years (2020 inclusive), only boys’ schools have won the competition. Where are the girls’ schools? I have been informed that the goal of the Quiz is to make science more attractive for young students to sponsor. As Councilor Daniel Fenyi, I accept this reasoning because Ghana, as a developing country, needs more future Medicine, Engineering and ICT / Technology oriented professionals to help it develop.
However, as an advocate for gender issues, I believe the NSMQ should broaden its scope to include the conscious incorporation of more girls. Science is a male-dominated field, so it is not surprising that no girls’ school made it to the grand finale, and even among the coeducational schools that participated, fewer girls were represented.
I suggest that ONE spot, of the three grand finale spots, MUST be automatically reserved for a girls’ school. I propose that all regionally qualified girls’ schools compete against each other and that the winner appear in the grand final. I don’t think girls aren’t that good. Sometimes the volume, the “jama”, the voice and the aggressiveness of the boys’ schools (along with their former students and supporters) could intimidate these bright but quiet ladies and therefore they may not be able to give the best of themselves.
Please think about this and let’s create a strategy for a grand finale of the NSMQ based on gender but based on merit.
