National airline operators are scheduled to resume flights from Accra to various destinations, starting today, Friday, May 1, 2020.

It follows the completion of a disinfection exercise carried out at the different airports in Accra, Tamale, Kumasi and Takoradi.

A statement from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) to Citi Business News said that the Authority together with Ghana Airports Company Limited and the Ghana Health Service have instituted measures to ensure smooth operations.

International and domestic flights were cut short when the President closed the country’s borders by invoking the Movement Restriction Act, from March 30 to April 20, 2020, as part of efforts to reduce the spread of the coronavirus in Ghana.

However, the GCAA says it will review established protocols as necessary and introduce improved procedures to improve measures to combat coronavirus and its effect on the aviation sector.

Meanwhile, national airline operators; Since then, Passion Air and Africa World Airlines have announced flight schedules to and from Accra, Kumasi and Tamale starting today.

Airports will likely open for domestic flights this weekend

After just a month of closing airports to commercial flights as part of the directives put in place to help stop the spread of coronavirus infection (COVID-19), Aviation Minister Kofi Adda hinted that domestic flights could resume this weekend.

He said that Ghana Airport Company Limited has implemented security measures at all airports in the country.

He was speaking to the media during a disinfection exercise at Kotoka International Airport by the waste management company, Zoomlion Ghana Limited.

“The airport company, led by port health officials, would ensure that all of the things that need to be in place to support the protocol’s implementation take place. All handwashing devices, disinfectants, and anything that needs to be done will be available. And that would be reviewed by the airport company and port health officials to ensure everything is in place before it starts operating. We are doing this deliberately because we want to start domestic flights first. ”

“In all of Africa, we are the only country that closed the airport and is about to start, so we must make sure that we do it well and correctly so that we can lead the way and set an example for other African countries to follow. . Perhaps by the weekend, we will now begin domestic flights, “he said.
