Former first lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings has reportedly withdrawn her candidacy in the December elections.

With only two weeks to go to the polls, sources close to her are expected to make an official announcement to that effect later today.

Her husband, Flt Lt (Rtd) Jerry John Rawlings died after a brief illness at Korle Bu University Hospital on November 12, 2020.

Since then, there have been calls from some quarters, including from the former Chief of Defense Staff of the Ghanaian Armed Forces, Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah (Rtd), who said JoyNews that the standard-bearer for the National Democratic Party (NDP) saves her late husband “embarrassment by withdrawing” from the general election.

This suggestion has been described by NDP Secretary General Mohammed Frimpong as the “illusion of a detractor”.

But in the latest turn of events, reports compiled by the newspaper ‘The New Publisher’ say that her decision “is mainly due to the death of her husband.”

Prior to this development, the Electoral Commission (EC) had accepted his candidacy for the presidency on the NDP list in December.

Ms. Rawlings is among the 12 personalities who qualified to participate in the presidential elections after the rigorous evaluation process of the EC.

She is one of only three women on the ballot to rule the country.
