The Special Prosecutor has given an update on the case of the dismissed CEO of the Public Procurement Authority (PPA), Adjenim Boateng Adjei.
In a press release on Monday, Martin Amidu said that “the resolution of the Adjenim Boateng Adjei case was taking too long to investigate because my attached investigative staff seemed compromised. Therefore, I requested that an interim report on the referral of the Adjenim Boateng Adjei case be presented to the President.
“When the first draft of the report was sent to me, I was shocked. I called a management meeting on August 10, 2020 with the investigators and pointed out how the incriminating evidence in their possession was inconsistent with their interim report.
“I suspended all ongoing investigations in all cases except those affecting pending cases in the Court. I tasked the investigators with tabulating the total deposits Mr. Adjei had made to his bank accounts in one week. This is pending to date. “
Adjei was suspended from his post by President Akufo-Addo following an investigative documentary by Manasseh Azure Awuni, which revealed that a company he co-owned has been selling government contracts that it won through restrictive, single-source bidding to the best bidder.
In suspending it, President Nana Akufo-Addo also ordered the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and the Special Prosecutor’s Office to investigate his designee for conflict of interest and corruption.
Two weeks ago, CHRAJ published its report recommending that the president fire and then suspend the head of the PPA and ban him from holding public office for the next five years.
In explaining why his work was delayed, Mr. Amidu cataloged the fact from his investigation.
“My Office never initiated the investigations into the“ Sales Contracts ”allegations due to the attitude of the investigators regarding the ongoing investigation into procurement malpractices that the Office was handling prior to the Presidency’s referral, and this explains why Mr. Manasseh Azure has not yet been invited to testify. “
“No one should ask me about my disciplinary authority over my seconded staff because I haven’t had any since I took office and those who needed to know had known about it for years. The documentary evidence is overwhelming, ”he said.
He said that CHRAJ should be commended for their work and reporting, but stated that “the only problem with the CHRAJ report is that for some reason it underestimates the amounts disclosed by the bank statements of Mr. Adjei’s three thoroughly reviewed bank accounts. by the Auditor General of this Office “.
