The Motorized Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD) has confiscated motorcycles from recalcitrant drivers in Madina, in the Greater Accra region.
Led by the division commander in charge of the MTTD, the team cracked down on reckless motorcyclists who were riding with utter disregard for other road users.
A total of 60 motorcycles were seized at the Division’s headquarters.
The motorcyclists were arrested for various crimes, including driving without a license, motorcycles without insurance, and many other crimes.
The MTTD, however, is investigating defaulters so that more punitive actions are imposed.
This comes in the midst of a severe debate about the operation of motorcycles in the country.
While one faction is of the opinion that the commercial bicycle operation should remain illegal because it presents high risks of death for users.
The other party argues that it should be legalized as it is a source of employment for cyclists.
One of the main campaign promises of the Democratic National Congress (NDC) is to reverse the ban on the popular ‘Okada’ business. The ban was passed when the party was in office.
However, Transport Minister Kwasi Ofori Asiamah revealed that the government has started consultations with interested parties to decide whether to review the law prohibiting the commercial use of motorcycles or implement it.
Over the years, cyclists from Okada have stormed parliament to demand legal recognition.
