The Mozambican government has denied reports of mass beheadings by Islamist militants in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.

The governor of the gas-rich province, Valige Tauabo, said there were no recent killings in any district in the province, contrary to reports.

He added that on April 6, the latest killings of known Islamists took place.

State media reported Tuesday that more than 50 people were beheaded by militants on a soccer field in a town in the Miudumbe district.

The gunmen chanted “Allahu Akbar” (“God is the greatest” in English), shot and set houses on fire when they raided Nanjaba village on Friday night, the Mozambique state news agency said, citing the survivors.

Governor Tauabo said there had only been “incursions by malefactors” who were being pursued by the military.

He added that the government is concerned about the spread of gun violence in Cabo Delgado.
