José Mourinho explained that he was overcome with frustration when he stated that there are problems with his Tottenham team that neither he nor any coach could solve.

Mourinho surprised with his post-match complaint following the Spurs’ 2-1 loss at West Ham, a fifth setback in six league games.

When asked what he meant by the initially cryptic comment, Mourinho insisted: ‘Nothing specific, nothing that you probably think I meant and I didn’t.

‘First of all, a press conference, three or four interviews, a flash interview, a couple of minutes after the games … Sometimes I think that the coaches are incredible guys not to say too many … it’s better than not use the words … You understand me.

“I think we have to be bright kids and be in control of our emotions and not say the wrong things because it is never easy, especially after a loss.

“Sometimes there are moments of frustration and post-match interviews are the perfect place to not say the right things or leave some things out.

“Today, at a press conference prior to the game, everything you say you can follow word for word, because we are calm, without pressure and without adrenaline. But after the games, it’s not easy for us. ‘

And apparently referring to harsh criticism from Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel of Callum Hudson-Odoi after he replaced the England winger after bringing him in alone at halftime, Mourinho added: [managers] We say things that can be controversial, we say things that people do not understand, we can say even really bad things, which was not my case but, for example, this weekend I think that one of my colleagues went a bit in his Words but that’s another story because it’s not José Mourinho, that’s not a problem.

‘In relation to my words, it is a great frustration to lose matches, especially matches like that. [at West Ham].

“I’d rather lose by playing well than by playing poorly, but when you lose and play poorly, the feeling is only one of disappointment and sometimes anger.

But when you play so well and lose, you realize that there are things that are not in your hands. You hit the post twice. That ball, the new ball, I hate that new ball, white and dark blue now, the ball didn’t want to go in [the net]. I can not control. The yellow ball will probably go in.

‘We had two posts, we had a lot of crosses on the face of the goal, you can’t control it. The VAR of course hit the mark with the disallowed goal. The VAR was correct. But you are hoping for a bit of luck and the VAR is correct. And the linesman was right. No he was not [the break we needed]. You make a mistake, start of the second half, boom, a goal. So there are things you can work on a lot, you can fight and you can analyze, but there are things that are out of your control. ‘

Mourinho says there is only one way for Spurs to turn things around in those cases where things go against them.

He added: ‘What can you do if you have things out of your control? Works!

‘That’s why after the [West Ham] game we did not go home. We got to the training ground and went to discuss the West Ham game, so in the next session we were ready to discuss it with the players.

‘The next day we analyze the first game against Wolfsberger and you work again and divide the groups. Some guys can train, others have to recover and you manage everything.

“You talk to everyone and you try to find out who is in the best shape with sports science and doctors. We work a lot in this building. And sometimes we feel the frustration. ‘
