Morgue workers suspend planned strike

The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) canceled their nationwide strike that was scheduled for October 1.

This follows successful negotiations between the workers and the Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations.

In a statement issued after the meeting that took place on Tuesday, September 29, 2020, it is said that the Ministry of Health and the Fair Wages and Wages Commission (FWSC) agreed on the Association’s demand to improve the conditions of service.

But speaking to JoyNews, the national president of the Ghana Mortuary Workers Association, Edward Mensah said that, although the scheduled strike has been canceled, the Association will not hesitate to follow through on its threat if the government does not follow through on its promise.

“We continue with the strike because the government has promised to comply with all our demands by the 28th of this month.

“If by then our problems have not been solved, then it is the government that gives us permission to go on strike and this time we will not listen to them because a promise is a promise and people must learn to keep the promises they make to them. the rest”. he said.

Below are the terms as detailed in the statement;

  • The Fair Wages and Wages Commission should work with MOWAG to resolve the wage and allowance issue taking into account the risks and uniqueness of their work.
  • That morgue attendant in health centers with registered cases of Covid-19 deaths should be considered part of the front-line staff, and therefore benefit from any accompanying benefits.
  • That the Ministry of Health should accelerate action and complete the issuance of letters of appointment for eligible mortuary workers.
  • That the Ministry of Health must guarantee the supply of adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to morgue workers in all health facilities at all times. Those PPEs should not only be limited to those from the Covid-19 pandemic, but also to their routine work assignments.
  • That MOWAG must contact the Department of Labor to resolve issues related to the issuance of a Collective Bargaining Certificate to MOWAG.
  • That all decisions made must be implemented in one month.
  • That a meeting between interested parties, including MOWAG, would be convened on or before October 27, 2020, to finalize the discussions.
  • That, MOWAG has agreed to suspend its planned strike.
