Education Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh says that more than 93,000 teachers have been employed by the end of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s first term.

According to him, all these teachers would have been unemployed if former President John Mahama had been retained in the 2016 presidential election.

The Minister argues that the Akufo-Addo-led administration prioritized teachers and their well-being, helping to place Ghana second in a recent world ranking that measures the status of teachers.

He spoke at the sixth edition of Nation Building Updates in Accra.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh added that the processes will begin on Monday, November 2, 2020 to hire more than 6,000 teachers.

“In the last four years, the national authorizations granted and the contracts that have been carried out at the end of this period would amount to 93,824. Under former President John Dramani Mahama, the country had an association of unemployed graduate teachers, but under President Akufo-Addo more than 24,000 graduate teachers have already been hired and hiring processes for another 6,000 graduate teachers would open on Monday. ”

“According to the culture of the diploma, the processes will be closed on Sunday where more than 14,000 teachers will be hired. This is because President Akufo-Addo cares about Ghanaian students and teachers. ” There are no teacher union strikes under Akufo-Addo

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh also said that the administration led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has treated the teacher unions in the country with respect.

According to him, there have been no teacher union strikes in the nearly four years that Nana Akufo-Addo has been in office.

“We have employed more than 93,000 people in the Ghana Education Service. We have paid more than 90% of the inherited arrears. We have abolished the three month policy. We have not had teacher union strikes because we have treated them with respect and dignity, “he said.

The minister also touted some achievements of the Akufo-Addo government.

“We have improved the promotion system and we all realized that in July, when the promotion came, the teachers applauded us because in three months everyone received their salary. We have introduced an assignment of 1,200 professional teachers, we have upgraded the faculties of education to university faculties. ”

“We have reinstated the allocation for trainee teachers. Not only have we maintained the book and research allocation, but we have also increased the research component by 200%. From GHS500 to GHS1000. And as we speak, teacher unions in the tertiary education space are sitting with the Fair Wages and Wages Commission (FWSC) to conclude on their terms of service, something they have never had since 2006 under the Kufour presidency, “he added .
