Inspector General of Police (IGP) James Oppong-Boanuh says the National Electoral Security Task Force will deploy 6,794 people across the country to ensure public order before, during and after the December elections.
He said the Task Force is ready to protect the 275 coalition centers and 40,000 polling stations across the country “with diligence.”
“We will approach all voting centers as critical points,” he said.
The IGP, who is also the chair of the Task Force, at a press conference in Accra, said that the Task Force has identified 6,178 hotspots across the country ahead of the 2020 general elections.
He said flash points were hit as a result of the incidence of the previous election, the recent voter registration exercise and the crime rate.
Oppong-Boanuh said that the Police have met with traditional leaders and religious organizations to educate the public on how to play their role in ensuring a peaceful electoral exercise.
“We have also been meeting with election observers and envoys on their observations and findings, which we incorporate into our plans and deliberations.
“Our priority also includes providing security for the Election Commission officials and the voting centers. We remain firm and committed to peace and order, before, during and after the elections, ”added the IGP.
The Task Force was established on October 17, 2019, composed of personnel from the Police, the Ghana Immigration Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Office of National Investigations, among other security services, with the mandate to guarantee peaceful elections.
