The third phase of the bus terminal and market disinfection exercise is currently underway in the Bono region, where more than 100 markets are expected to be disinfected.

The exercise, which is a collaboration between the waste management giant Zomlion Ghana Limited and the various municipal assemblies, is a measure to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Addressing the media in Sunyani, the capital of the Ahafo region where the exercise began, Ms. Justina Awoe Obamtampa Owusu Banahene, Municipal Chief Executive Officer (MCE) of the Sunyani Municipal Assembly said that the exercise aims to “combat the virus”.

According to her, “we need to protect ourselves against the Covid-19 pandemic and a safe way is to clean up our environment.”

Based on this, he said, his team and Zoomlion Ghana Limited have worked together to “kill all germs in public places.”

The MCE said that the disinfection exercise “will protect us and we have made announcements over the last week that all of our markets will be closed for the exercise.”

Ms Owusu Banahene therefore urged all Ghanaians and Sunyani people to observe Covid-19 protocols as the virus is spreading again in the area.

In addition to the markets, the social centers, the Sunyani Coronation Park and all the platforms where small groups of people gather were disinfected.

More than 300 markets to benefit

For her part, the General Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited for the three regions, Ahafo, Bono and Bono East, Ms. Esther Abayeta Asadoo, said that more than 300 markets and public places have been allocated for the exercise.

According to her, this is the third phase of the market disinfection exercise that aims to slow the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said that since there is no vaccine for the pandemic, “we are trying to use all progressive ways” to combat its spread.

Ms. Asadoo said that more than 400 Zoomlion employees have been dispatched to conduct the exercise in the three regions.

He also called on everyone to independently contribute their quota to the fight against the virus, adding that “Let’s not politicize Covid.”

“We should use all means to protect ourselves against the virus because the virus is now increasing in the Bono region”

So far, Sunyani coal market, Nana Bosma market, Abesim daily market, Atronie market, Baakonuaba, Kotokrom market and New Darmaa market have been disinfected.
