While in Tarkwa, the president commissioned a 5-story administration block for the Tarkwa campus of the University of Mines and Technology. He also commissioned the GNPC School of Petroleum Studies also in Tarkwa.
The school project, with an ultra-modern science laboratory, cost GH ¢ 12 million and is part of GNPC’s efforts to build local capacity for Ghana’s oil sector at the local level, to maximize retention of value.
According to GNPC CEO Dr. KK Sarpong, the Corporation was inspired by the self-reliance policy of the Ghana President Beyond Aid and has taken steps to make it a reality in the oil sector.
“We recognize that the key to achieving that agenda is ensuring that our higher education institutions are producing the human resource requirements that are tailored not just to the industry, but to the industry at large.
That could only happen through research and collaboration between industry and academia, “he said.
Additional efforts have been made, he stressed, “to accelerate efforts to close the gap in human resource requirements, to develop the capacity of Ghanaians along the oil industry value chain.”
In his response, the Vice Chancellor of the UMaT, Prof. RK Amankwaah, expressed his gratitude to GNPC for the project and to the President for the honor of commissioning it.
In addition, he assured the University’s commitment to regularly maintain the Facility. The president had previously commissioned a new administrative bloc at the University.
The GNPC School of Petroleum Studies will have laboratories, conference rooms, an office for teachers and other administrative staff. The two schools will work closely with the GNPC Professional Chairs and will serve as a regional hub to train students in the oil and gas sector.
