Mohamed Salah celebration explained after last goal in Liverpool win

The Premier League returned on Saturday and Mohamed Salah was back among the goals immediately as Liverpool began their title defense.

After ending a 30-year wait for a league title last season, Liverpool start the new campaign at the top of the hanger with the other 19 teams in the division looking to bring them down.

Leeds United certainly tried to do just that at Anfield, as Marcelo Bielsa’s side put on a spectacular performance, but were left with nothing after a 4-3 loss.

All three points were in Merseyside and Liverpool had Salah to thank as their Egyptian king scored a hat-trick to bring him the match ball.

Fans were quick to identify a different celebration embraced by the former Roma player, covering his ears with his hand after his third goal, and now the reason is explained.

Salah’s actions were a tribute to his international teammate Moamen Zakaria, emulating his friend’s usual celebration.

Zakaria suffers from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as motor neuron disease, which affects the brain and spinal cord.

On Friday night, Zakaria’s teammates at Egyptian Al Ahly also showed their solidarity by replaying their celebration after the 3-0 win over Ismaily.

Egyptian journalist Mohamed Adam told ECHO: “Much of the Egyptian media is talking about this.

“[Zakaria] He is a friend of Salah and everyone in the Egyptian football world feels sorry for him.

“This is his signature celebration, so I think Salah did it as a tribute.

“Too [Zakaria] He wears the number eight and Salah made the hand gesture [to represent] eight in Arabic. “
