Luka Modric has been a key player for Real Madrid in the eight years he has been playing in the Spanish capital and, with his contract expiring next June, he is seeking a contract extension.

If possible, the 35-year-old would like to end his career with Los Blancos.

“Of course I want to stay at Real Madrid, but it doesn’t depend only on me,” he told Cadena Cope’s ‘El Partidazo’.

“It depends on what the club wants and also on the coach.

“I feel good and my wish would be to finish my career at Real Madrid if possible, although I don’t want to be a problem for Real Madrid or the manager.

We have a good relationship and I am sure that we will reach an agreement for me to stay or go to another club.

“Real Madrid is my home and it is my ninth season and I am very happy.

“We’ll see what happens, I don’t like to talk about hypothetical situations because I haven’t talked to the president yet.”

The Croatian international also spoke about the many coaches he has played for in the Real Madrid jersey, including José Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Rafa Benítez and Zinedine Zidane.

“José Mourinho was a key piece in my transfer to Real Madrid,” revealed Modric.

“It’s a shame that I only spent one year with him as he is an incredible coach and has shown it throughout his career.”

“I will always be grateful to him.

“He is tough, but always open and I like honest people.

“Ancelotti is another spectacular coach and an even better person.

“I had two very successful seasons with him where we won the Champions League and the Copa del Rey.

“I get along well with him and we still talk from time to time.

Benítez is a very good coach, but things did not go well for him at Real Madrid.

“That is football, not all coaches come to a team and are successful.

“I had no problem with him.

“From the outside it seemed like there was a problem in training but it was nothing and we got along well.

“Zidane is a great coach and what he has done with us is something that cannot be repeated.

“People still don’t appreciate him as a coach and they always question him, but he’s one of the best coaches in the world.”

“On television and radio you hear criticism of him and people can criticize, but there are things that do not make sense.

“He is a spectacular coach who has clear ideas and who galvanizes the players.

“He could have many more years at Real Madrid and could even emulate players like Alex Ferguson or Arsene Wenger in England.”

Modric was also questioned about his opinion on the VAR and if he thought things should change.

“There are many complaints about the VAR and many people believe that Real Madrid is helped by the VAR, but tell me a decision that was not the right one for us,” he said.

“All the VAR decisions in which Real Madrid has been involved and that have been in our favor have been correct.

“The VAR makes football more fair, although there are things that can be improved.”

During the interview, Modric even spoke about his roots in Croatia and also had a heartfelt story to share.

“I had an incredible relationship with my grandfather because when my parents were at work I stayed with him,” Modric told the audience.

“It was very sad what happened [when his grandfather was killed in the war] and he left a mark because I was very young and he was a very important person to me.

“It affected me a lot because I was still young and didn’t understand why things like this could happen.

“Things have been etched into my memory, things like when people went looking for it and I knew they wouldn’t find it.

“It was a very sad situation for all of us, but we survived.

“We have very good memories of him and it’s a shame he didn’t see what I accomplished.

“But I hope he’s looking down from above.”

Croatia will play Switzerland this week in a friendly match before facing Sweden and France in the Nations League.

“I am looking forward to seeing my teammates because it has been a year since I played for Croatia,” Modric said.
