Luka Modric has dashed hopes of a possible return to Tottenham by agreeing to extend his stay at Real Madrid.
José Mourinho was reportedly interested in luring the 35-year-old midfielder back to north London.
The Spurs coach has already brought a Real Madrid player to the club in recent times with the loan of Gareth Bale earlier this year after a seven-year stay in the Spanish capital.
Modric is free to negotiate with any team on January 1, but the Croatian midfielder has admitted that he is happy in Spain.
Marca reported on Saturday night that the Croatian international has reached an agreement in principle to extend his current contract, which ends in June 2021.
The Croatian international will renew his contract for one more year until June 30, 2022.
The new deal will extend his stay in the Spanish capital to 10 years after joining from Tottenham Hotspur for £ 30 million in 2012.
During his eight and a half years in the Spanish capital, Modric has won four Champions League titles, two in LaLiga and the Ballon d’Or.
Last month, Modric said he wanted to end his career at the club.
He said: ‘I feel good, I feel strong and I still have a lot of football in my legs and strength to go on, but let’s see what happens in the future.
‘I have said it many times and I will say it again, I am very happy at Madrid and I would love to finish my career here, but let’s see what happens.
‘Who wouldn’t want to end his career at Real Madrid? But it depends on many things. But there is no one who is happier than me to continue at Real Madrid. ‘
