Ministry of National Security meets with NDC on 2020 elections

The Ministry of National Security and the National Electoral Security Working Group have assured political parties of impartiality during the 2020 general elections.

According to the Ministry, all the necessary arrangements have been made to guarantee elections free of violence.

These were released in a ministry statement after a meeting with the opposition Democratic National Congress NDC where other electoral security arrangements were discussed.

According to the statement signed by Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, these commitments will be extended to other political parties.

In addition, all security officers deployed for the elections will wear labels for easy identification.

The Ministry of National Security held a meeting in Accra on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 with a delegation from the Democratic National Congress, at the request of the latter.

The meeting discussed a number of issues including;

to. Preparations of the National Electoral Security Working Group for the pending presidential and parliamentary elections.

second. Recent criminal activities of some groups along the eastern corridor of the country and implications for the peace and security of Ghana; Regarding the security arrangements for the presidential and parliamentary elections, the meeting was briefed on the preparations by the National Elections Security Task Force.

The meeting underscored the fact that all security agency officers will wear identification badges.

In addition, an adequate registry of security agents will be kept to facilitate their consultation.

The Election Security Working Group will engage all political parties to ensure their cooperation and compliance with the Election Security provisions.

Ministry officials also provided an overview of the security threats posed by some groups along the eastern corridor of the country.

In the ensuing discussions, the NDC delegation, while fully supporting the need to defend and preserve the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ghana, shared its own perspectives and concerns about recent events in the Volta region.

The meeting emphasized the need for transparency and ongoing dialogue to build trust even when addressing broader national security concerns.

At the meeting, the Minister assured the government’s commitment to maintaining a climate conducive to free and fair elections.

Follow-up meetings will be held and will be extended to other political parties.
