Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed that Gunners defender Calum Chambers is “very close” to returning to the first team.
The 25-year-old joined Arsenal in the summer of 2014 for a reported fee of up to £ 16 million, and has made 101 competitive appearances for the Gunners.
However, Chambers has not played high-level football since last December, when he suffered a serious knee injury during the first half of the Premier League loss to Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.
The English international, who was one of Arsenal’s star men prior to Arteta’s arrival, has returned to action for the Under-23s, taking part in Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy.
Speaking ahead of the Gunners Europa League meeting with Rapid Vienna, the Spaniard provided an update on the 6-foot ace.
“He is evolving very well,” Arteta told Football London. “He has played a few minutes with the U-23 in recent weeks.
“It has been a long injury and you know that injuries like that take a long time for your body, your biomechanics to be completely natural to compete. But I will say that now he is very close to playing again ”.
TBR view:
It has been a long and difficult road to recovery for Chambers, but having emerged unscathed from several U-23 games, it’s great to know that he is very close to returning to the first team.
Arsenal have been struggling in the Premier League in recent weeks, so the return of Chambers, plus several other players like Gabriel Martinelli who are also making good progress, will be a huge boost.
