Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has defended winger Willian’s form after criticism from a section of Arsenal fans.

Willian got off to a brilliant start to his career at Arsenal, but his form has since sunk with some fans asking Arteta to bench the player in games.

The latest criticism of Willian came from vocal club fan Pier Morgan, who took to Twitter to point out, “What the heck happened to Willian?” before the club scored two goals against Newcastle United in their FA Cup tie on Saturday.

Morgan’s sentiments were echoed by the club’s great Ian Wright, who said of Willian and Pepe: “These are two players we needed a lot from and, to be honest, we are not getting it.”

While admitting that Willian has not been in his prime, Arteta defended the Brazilian in his post-match press saying the former Chelsea player was improving by the day.

“Well, I think he was getting better and better. The other day he did really well against West Brom. He was also out because he was sick so he missed almost two weeks of training and soccer and today was the first time he started the game. Arteta said.

Willian was withdrawn in the game by Bukayo Saka with club goals scored by Emile Smith Rowe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in extra time after Newcastle had held the hosts to a goalless draw in regulation time.
