Arsenal’s January transfer window appears to be just as busy as the previous one with many players on the starting list.
The Gunners are looking to make room for the players Mikel Arteta needs to get through the season. A losing streak of matches in the first half of the Premier League campaign has forced Arsenal to make a lot of moves in January.
It has been a tough first full campaign in charge of the North London club for the Spaniard. After a convincing start to life on opening day against Fulham, it all started to unravel when they found themselves far behind in their quest for a Champions League spot.
After a seven-game series without a win, they finally got things back on track. They were languishing in the lower half of the table for much of the season, struggling to get out of 15th place. Thanks to a shape change just before the end of the year, they are two places up at 13th.
Now, in order not to slip back into depression, the club’s deadwood must be shipped so that space can be made for the players that Arteta needs to continue his progress.
Several players have been transferred with Sead Kolasinac, the first player apparently on his way out. The underdog defender will join Bundesliga FC Schalke on loan until the end of the season.
Joining him on the list are the omitted Mesut Ozil, Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who have all battled for playing time. Taking these gardeners off the books in the Emirates must happen before they can bring in new names, according to the manager.
It is said that Granit Xhaka was added late to this list for her inexcusable red card offense against Burnley, a game they lost after falling to a man.
Mikel Arteta has made cutting the Arsenal team his priority for the January transfer window, admitting that the club “cannot sustain” the number of players currently on its books.
Several big names, such as Mesut Ozil, Shkodran Mustafi, Sead Kolasinac and Sokratis Papastathopoulos, have subsequently fought for minutes this period or have froze.
According to director Gunner, the plans fell apart and the business never progressed as the club would have liked during the summer window.
Arteta said about his great Arsenal team:
We have a great squad. We knew that and many things that we wanted to do in the summer that we could not achieve for different reasons.
There are players who are going to go on loan, they are going to go, and that is the priority for now. We cannot hold the numbers we have in terms of substitutions.

The club has largely been linked to a loan from Real Madrid’s Isco and Sevilla’s Joan Jordán in a permanent deal said to be around £ 32m.
The work is necessary for them after alienating their most creative player to the role of spectator. In the final days of the summer transfer window, they just missed out on who was supposed to be Ozil’s replacement, Olympique Lyon’s Houssem Aouar.
