The Soccer.com map showing America’s favorite players by state is dominated by Messi, Ronaldo and Christain Pulisic, but some states have featured some left field options.
The “beautiful game” will never be America’s number one sport. But thanks to the successes of the World Cup-winning women’s team and the growing number of stars born or naturalized in the United States making a name for themselves in Europe, the popularity of soccer in the United States continues to rise.
Among those stars is Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic, which is one of the names that make up the top five best-selling jerseys in the US.
Soccer.com, the store specializing in the sale of soccer clothing and soccer products in the United States, has compiled the list, with Lionel Messi topping the ranking, followed by Pulisic in second place and Cristiano Ronaldo in third.
PSG star Kylian Mbappé, the world’s most expensive player, ranks fourth, followed by Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford in fifth. According to a poll by Gilt Edge Soccer Marketing, United are the third most popular team in the United States, behind Barcelona (first) and Real Madrid (second).
Messi, Ronaldo, Pulisic dominate the map of favorite players by US state.
Soccer.com also posted an interesting chart that maps each state’s favorite player based on jersey sales.
It’s no wonder the top three, Messi, Pulisic and Ronaldo dominate the map. But some states have come up with some interesting options.
The Dakotas have made decisions relatively “from left field,” with North Dakota picking Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes, while South Dakota’s favorite player is Juventus center-back veteran Leonardo Bonucci.
Oregon, home to one of the most liberal cities in America, Portland, has rightly chosen a leftist, Sadio Mané of Liverpool. Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford is the most popular player in Alaska, while in Hawaii is his United attacking partner Anthony Martial.
Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli may not be his coach José Mourinho’s favorite player in the Spurs locker room, but he’s certainly number one in Vermont if Soccer.com jersey sales are anything to go through. .
