“We cannot tailor a deal just for Messi,” said the president of the club’s management committee, Carles Tusquets, as Barcelona seek to save 300 million euros.
Lionel Messi will not receive special treatment from Barcelona as the LaLiga giants seek to reduce their payroll before the presidential elections to be held at Christmas.
The Catalan club is desperate to cut its spending by 300 million euros to stay financially stable while playing behind closed doors amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Barça expects to agree salary postponements with the first team squad this week and the president of the club’s management committee Carles Tusquets made it clear that Messi, who has a contract at the Camp Nou until June, will not be treated differently.
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner expressed his wish to leave Barcelona in August but he stayed there after former president Josep Maria Bartomeu refused to let him go for free.
Tusquets: “We can’t tailor a deal just for Messi”
“I think we can reach an agreement. It seems to me that there is a will to do so. We do not want to take money from anyone but to adjust salaries so that we can pay them when possible – this is the solution that we believe is the most viable under the circumstances, “Tusquets said.
“We cannot tailor a deal just for [Messi]. We can create different structures for similar cases, but we cannot tailor deals for individuals.
“We intend to resolve the issue with all staff and all employees, and we will do our best to make sure everyone is satisfied.”
“According to the money available, we know that our revenue will be reduced by around 300 million euros if we cannot open the stadium. Even if we can, it won’t be fully open this season.
“I won’t go into details about Messi because we have to finish the negotiations first. What I can say is that there is the will of Messi and his representatives.
“There is no reason to hide that the wage bill in Barcelona is the highest in Europe but I like to look to the future and today I was with [technical director Ramon] Planes [head coach Ronald] Koeman and [chief executive Oscar] Grau, and I congratulated them on the courage to bet on young players, not many have that much courage.
“We are at the top of the ranking in terms of salary spending, around 70 percent of the total club budget and that’s a lot, but we’re working on it. “
Barcelona do not plan any January move for new players
Tusquets heads a temporary board called after Bartomeu’s resignation last week and hopes that elections to choose a permanent predecessor will be held before the end of the year.
“We created a working group that will contact the health authorities to guarantee the total safety of our members and at the same time guarantee the greatest possible participation,” he said.
“We will deploy all logistical and human resources so that it is well organized, always respecting the club’s statutes. We could also promote voting by mail. “
Barça have been four games without victories in LaLiga, but Tusquets has made it clear that they have no plans for major reinforcements when the January transfer window opens.
He said: “I feel like we should only make a move if a player can have zero cost. Or if a player is sold on the transfer window, then we could buy.
“But all these decisions can be reversed in the next presidency. If the new board wants to go back on everything we decide, then they are free to do so. “
