Barcelona managed a 2-1 win over Dynamo Kyiv on Wednesday night in the Champions League, and the Ukrainian team proved to be a constant threat in the home of the Catalan giants, which is why Leo Messi was unable to track down the dying stages. The game has sparked controversy.
Messi scored a penalty in the first five minutes, but it was anything but comfortable for the locals from there. The visitors created plenty of good chances and, even when Barcelona doubled their lead thanks to Gerard Piqué in the 65th minute, Viktor Tsyhankov’s 10 minutes later made it a tense finish.
In the 92nd minute, with the Dynamo launching another attack to try and salvage a point, Messi could be seen absently watching Oleksandr Andrievsky carry the ball forward at the midfield line, which has outraged some corners of social media.
In the end, it wasn’t costly as Barcelona held all three points, but the club captain’s attitude certainly didn’t set a great example, and the footage doesn’t do him any favors either.
Messi’s desire to leave Barcelona in the summer was no secret, but it seemed that once it was clear what he was going to say, his commitment to the club was no longer in doubt. However, coupled with a mediocre display at night, the incident does not reflect the Argentine well.
Ronald Koeman has tried to assert his authority since he arrived, believing that no player is bigger than the club, but motivating Messi to help with some of the defensive work could prove a mission.
Despite strong criticism, some sections of social media rushed to defend Messi, claiming that he had come back earlier in the game and that fatigue at the end of the match was the reason for his inactivity.
