The chiefs of the traditional Mepe area in the Volta region have unreservedly condemned the secessionist attacks on the Mepe and Aveyime police stations during last week’s uprising by the Fatherland Study Group Foundation.

The chiefs declaring their disapproval of the unrest orchestrated by members of the West Togo West group through a letter addressed to the Volta Regional Minister and copied to the press, assured the security agencies of their unwavering support in dealing with the group , but they warned them against the violation of the rights of common people.

“It should be noted that the people of Mepe disapprove of any secessionist movement and wish this unfortunate incident had never happened,” the letter said.

“We also look forward to a demonstration of a high degree of professionalism by the security agencies in handling the situation so as not to violate the rights of the peace-loving citizens of Mepe and other Tongu states.”

The chiefs, as part of the strategies for a successful resolution of the riots, proposed a meeting of stakeholders of the District Security Council, Traditional Authorities, Religious Leaders, District Assemblymen, Political Leaders, Representatives of Youth and Non-Governmental Organizations, “To dialogue and design holistic strategies to achieve a lasting solution to this threat.”

While the letter disassociates traditional Tongu areas from the 1956 plebiscite in British Togo, where the majority, 58% voted for a union, the chiefs believe that the group’s activities stem from misinformation regarding the plebiscite and called on young people who are informed. in consecuense.
