Bayern Munich managed to win their second game in a row against RB Salzburg, taking their UCL winning streak to 15 games. Like the last one, Salzburg played very well and may be disappointed that they leave Munich without a point. Here are the BFW match awards from today’s Champions League match.
Shirt change: Mohamed Camara
Like last time, Mohamed Camara played a good game for the Austrians against Bayern. He is far from a finished product and has a lot to mature in terms of play style, but he is an impressive talent who gives it his all every time he plays. Especially in the first half, Camara’s run and innings helped Salzburg often change the direction of the game. The Malian is not the most famous of Red Bull Salzburg’s many talented youngsters, but he is someone to watch out for in the future.
The Emperor: Manuel Neuer
Manuel Neuer’s double save before Mergim Berisha’s goal was another of those saves that only the best goalkeepers can make. The Bayern captain was also great in the first half and was possibly the main reason why the Bavarians were able to go into halftime as the winning team.
I’ve lost count of how many games in a row Neuer has rushed to stop a clear one-on-one. With Hansi Flick’s tall line, Neuer’s natural ability to be the street sweeper is on display more than ever.
Salzburg played very well today and in my opinion the difference was individual quality, including Manuel Neuer.
God of football: Leon Goretzka
He was willing to give this to Marc Roca. Don’t get me wrong, Roca has a lot of work to do to become a Bayern starter, at least with Hansi Flick. I don’t think Flick’s 4-2-3-1 and high intensity tactical setup suit Marc Roca very well. Roca is more of an underlying playmaker, who, I think, would thrive on a slower tempo team that is more focused on retaining possession.
Roca’s defensive and box-to-box limitations are probably the main reason he hasn’t had a significant amount of playing time. Bayern’s midfield was extremely open in the first half and I think it’s partly for that reason. That being said, Roca is an excellent passer and a player who will not lose the ball once he receives it.
However, the inexperienced red card robs him of the award tonight and thus Leon Goretzka takes the award. Goretzka is a better soccer player than he showed in today’s performance, but he was also better than Thomas Müller, for which he takes the award.
Der Bomber: Kingsley Coman
A stroke, albeit a very lucky one, leading to an own goal and a well-executed assist gives Kingsley Coman the prize. Like Goretzka, Bayern fans have seen Kingsley play better, although in this game he was better than Serge Gnabry. I, for one, also appreciated his winning attitude today as he often made honorable runs for the team.
Master of the Match: Robert Lewandowski
“He’s like Gerd Müller,” my father said after Robert Lewandowski scored the first goal of the game, referring to Lewandowski’s ability to always seem to be in the right place at the right time.
He is much more than just a prolific scorer, as he is crucial to Bayern’s preparation game and overall attacking threat. As mentioned above, the difference today was individual quality and Lewandowski joins Neuer on that statement.
