Marcus Rashford has insisted that Manchester United need to clinch the silver medal in 2021 after several failures last season.
United have failed to lift their first trophy with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer despite reaching three semi-finals with him, but expectations are high once again after their strong start in national life this time around.
And star forward Rashford, who enjoyed a memorable 2020 both on and off the pitch, has underscored the desire at Old Trafford to regain their glory days.
“The platform has been around for a while and in this last year we have taken greater steps forward, which is obviously positive for us,” he said in an interview on the club’s official website.
“We missed some trophies, we lost in the semi-finals and that’s what we have to correct next year and make sure we get over the line and win trophies.
“ That’s the next thing we have to do as a team, then it’s about doing it consistently and being able to repeat it one after the other, which is more difficult than doing it the first time.
“We still have a long way to go, but at the moment we are in a good place and we are focusing on ourselves and our team and we are just trying to get better with each game.”
The last time United tasted glory was in 2017, with José Mourinho, although recently the club has come close to breaking its three-year-old duck.
Defeats to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, Chelsea in the FA Cup and Sevilla in the Europa League, all in the semi-final stage, meant that Solskjaer’s side failed to mark their season-ending increase with a success tangible.
Rashford, who scored his 50th goal in the Premier League, and 80th for his club, in United’s dramatic victory over Wolves, will prove crucial to achieving his lofty goals.
He added: ‘My main goal is to help the team and as a striker it’s the goals and assists that do that, so the more I can get the better for the team.
“ That is what I am focusing on and ultimately that is what will help the team score points and if we have three or four of us who are playing that way and trying to help each other to score, then we can. have great chances this season.
The 20-time top flight champions will be able to level the points with Liverpool with a win over Aston Villa on Friday night.
