Marcus Rashford benefited from an unusual situation to get on the scoreboard against Istanbul Basaksehir earlier this week.
With Bruno Fernandes in a hat-trick, most expected the Portuguese playmaker to step up when Rashford won a penalty in the first half.
Instead, Fernandes passed the ball to Rashford, who scored his fifth goal in four Champions League games this season.
The incident left Manchester United legend Paul Scholes mystified as he watched in the studio as he covered the match for BT Sport.
“I don’t get it,” Scholes said. “Fernandes has taken every penalty when he has played. He has a chance of making a hat-trick on a European night, I don’t understand it.
“But in the end we get the same result, so there is not too much damage.”
Marcus Rashford has expressed his opinion on the situation and explained exactly why Fernandes gave up the penalty.
He revealed that the Red Devils are eager to share goals with each other to keep confidence high, pointing to a similar scenario where he gave Anthony Martial a penalty a few weeks ago.
He told Stretty News: “There was a similar situation during the Leipzig game when I could have gotten the first hat-trick of my career.
“As a forward, your confidence comes from consistently scoring goals and that’s why Tony was important. [Martial] had the opportunity to enter the payroll.
“Fortunately I got the hat-trick and we had a fantastic result against a very tough team, but the important thing at the time was that the team felt good, confident and motivated to move on to the next series of games. It’s a very busy time and we all play a role in the team’s success. “
Immediately after the match, Bruno Fernandes gave a similar reasoning when noting that Rashford had given him a penalty in the Premier League earlier this campaign.
“That’s not the point,” he told BT Sport when asked if he was feeling charitable.
“Of course, all the players want to score a hat-trick.
“But after the Premier League game I told Rashy that he would stick with the next one.
“So I remembered it, and also because Rashy is one of the top scorers in the Champions League.
“I think it will be important for him to go ahead and have that confidence.
“But like I said, it doesn’t matter who takes the penalties, the most important thing is to score. The team scores. When the team scores, I score too ”.
