Manchester United face a tense night in Germany next week after failing to secure their passage to the Champions League round of 16 against Paris Saint-Germain.
United entered the game at Old Trafford knowing that a draw would be enough to seal their way into the next phase of the competition with a game to spare, but goals from Neymar and Marquinhos secured a much-needed victory for the visiting team.
United made three changes from the team that beat Southampton at the weekend, with Scott McTominay, Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani in place of Nemanja Matic, Donny van de Beek and Mason Greenwood.
Neymar opened the scoring in the first half as the visitors dominated the opening stages, but United returned to play and deservedly equalized when a Marcus Rashford shot deflected wide Keylor Navas.
Martial missed a golden opportunity after the break before the crossbar denied Cavani a stun, and United’s failure to capitalize on his dominance was punished when Marquinhos drove home from a corner kick.
Fred received a second yellow card shortly thereafter and United could not find a draw before Neymar made it 3-1 at the end.
