Why Fred and McTominay are starting
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suggested that Scott McTominay and Fred are Manchester United’s most stable midfield partnership to allow their attackers to prosper.
McTominay and Fred were called up for a 3-1 win over Everton at Goodison Park after Fred was not used in the midweek Champions League loss to Istanbul Basaksehir, where McTominay emerged for the second half.
The pair have started together in five of United’s last seven games, including victories over Newcastle and Paris Saint-Germain, and the Basaksehir tie was the only match Fred rested for in the last seven.
Here’s what Solskjaer had to say about their partnership:
“Scott and Fred have done great together. They are a great association. Of course, they didn’t start during the week. Scott played 45 minutes in Turkey but you can tell they have fresh legs.
“With Bruno [Fernandes]Scott and Fred’s goals with that energy and in that engine room are always key for us so that our creative players can move forward, create opportunities, show their magic.
“They are so disciplined and very satisfied with both of them.”
